So we are all settling in and slowing down. Day 5, yesterday, saw us in port enjoying some down time in between what has felt like quite long sea legs. The girls have coped remarkably well to the massive change. Life at sea has it’s own rhythm and it’s hard to keep track of the hours.
When you are sailing through the night, a watch must be kept and all crew aboard (except the really small one) are part of this watch. The girls second night watch included an entry by night into port. 0200 hours, dark, lots of lights flashing that we had to navigate around, once inside the marina, the fog descended – it was very surreal for the girls and a moment I think they will remember for the rest of their lives.
Ryan spent much of his day yesterday down a small hole doing boat work, he loves working in small confined spaces (not) but at least this persuaded him to have his first shower of the trip! Oh, the many merits of a marina shower – but that deserves another blog all of it’s own. Yesterday the girls were clambering to start boat school (having been told they were having a week off) amazing – so keen! We got our books and pens out and decorated the books and put them on our trays ready for maths tomorrow – hopefully the eagerness lasts… some boredom helps!
This morning everyone had fallen into a slick routine before departure, Sophie got the mainsail ready, Isla stowed all loose items and checked the hatches, but what to give the smallest, most vertically challenged member of the crew? Latching the low door latches is a job that Jocie does with pride, there is no better person for that role!!
So off we go across Biscay, we plan on being at sea now for 3-4 days and we are all looking forward to falling into the routine that being at sea requires. I just overheard Isla saying, ‘I can’t wait for boat school!’ – no joke!
Happy Adventures! I am so proud and honored to call you all my family. Stay safe and hope the beginning of the trip is rewarding as I know it has its challenges. Love you all very much and sending all the good vibes your way!
